Choose a journal, prepare your manuscript and follow its current submission requirements.
1. Choose the right journal
Start with the journal’s aims and scope. Review recent articles and the article types it accepts before preparing your submission.
2. Originality and prior dissemination
Do not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time. Disclose relevant preprints, theses, conference papers, translated versions or closely related work and follow the selected journal’s policy.
3. Authorship and contributions
List as authors only people who made a qualifying contribution and accept responsibility for the work. All authors should approve the submitted version and the choice of journal. Acknowledge other contributors appropriately.
4. Research ethics, permissions and competing interests
Obtain the ethics approvals, participant permissions, licences and third-party permissions required for the research and manuscript. Disclose funding and relationships that could reasonably be seen as influencing the work.
5. Prepare the manuscript
Follow the journal’s author guide for structure, references, tables, figures, supplementary files, declarations and file formats. Report methods clearly, distinguish results from interpretation and support claims with evidence.
6. Artificial intelligence and assisted tools
AI tools cannot be authors. Authors remain responsible for accuracy, originality, citations, permissions and integrity. Disclose substantive AI use in the way required by the journal.
7. Submit your manuscript
Open the selected journal and use its Submit manuscript link. Complete the required declarations and upload all requested files before finalising the submission.
8. Peer review and revision
A manuscript that passes initial editorial checks may be sent for peer review. If revision is invited, respond to each substantive point, identify the changes made and explain respectfully where you have not followed a suggestion.
9. Charges, discounts and waivers
Submission is free. If an Article Processing Charge applies after acceptance, check the current charge and any available discount or waiver before payment.
10. After acceptance
Check proofs carefully and return corrections using the instructions provided by the journal. Major changes after acceptance may require editorial review.
11. After publication
If you discover an error that could affect the published article, contact the journal promptly. Material changes are handled transparently through corrections, expressions of concern, retractions or other appropriate notices.
